You will find literally heaps of interview questions and answers out there but I did not notice a single website that shows people recommendations on how to answer the questions. They just offer the answers and that’s it.

Why is that bad?

Because the vast majority of job hunters will merely copy those answers without actually knowing them, and when the interviewer throws in a follow up question, come interview time, they end up getting lost. This fact makes a large number of interview assistance websites useless.

Realizing the need, I decided to create this article and fill in the blank. There are various kinds of interview questions and I will discuss 3 of them in this short article.

Behavioral interview questions – These types of questions are getting more and more popular since they not only test an individual's behaviour over a given scenario, they also show how a person recounts past events and how effective they are in conveying a message. It is actually some kind of a communication skills test as well.

Here is a sample behavioral interview question and answer

Give me an example of a time when you encouraged others

"The current financial meltdown led a lot of companies to downsize; it affected nearly every industry including ours. Several of my colleagues back then were hunting for other jobs because they were afraid that they might get laid off. Realizing the problem, I began talking with my group and told them that we should not abandon the company, if we carry out our job well the management will notice and we'll be too valuable to let go of. So we stuck with the company and started multi-tasking because several jobs were left vacant. The corporation got through the crunch and we all got a reward for carrying out a great job."

Notice that the reply starts with a problem, followed by an action, and then an outcome. This is the most appropriate way to effectively answer behavioral questions. It must be in that order so the message is clear.

Situational interview questions – These are the “what if” questions that are made to test your problem solving and critical thinking capabilities. You are usually given a scenario where you must choose between 2 actions that have particular effects on your job or personal life.

Here is a sample situational interview question and answer

What would you do if a team member is resisting a new idea you are introducing?

“I’ve worked in a team before and have been in this situation. What I did at that time was to speak with the team member who is resisting the idea and I tried to find out the reason for his resistance. Issues like this almost always boils down to mis-communication and misunderstanding on the team member’s part. Once I found out the reason for his resistance, I then formulated a solution and then we all agreed on the new idea.”

These kinds of questions demand some thought because there will be a consequence regardless of what action you choose. So you have to weigh your alternatives, evaluate the situation, prioritize, and then decide on which course to take.

Non-direct interview questions – These are generic questions that don’t really ask for something specific. One of the most common non-direct interview questions is;

“Tell me something about yourself”

In addressing this specific question, you should be able to discuss your education, skills, experiences, and personality in as short as 2mins. Don’t get carried away and start telling stories that are unnecessary. As much as possible, relate your answer to the opportunity you are vying for.

Those are 3 kinds of interview questions, and most importantly, how to answer them. It is highly recommended to think about possible answers to as many interview questions that you can discover because you’ll never know exactly what questions will get asked. It is also best to practice saying your answers out loud and find out whether you are sounding like a robot or not. Nothing beats an candidate who is well prepared.

3 Behavioral Questions to Prepare For

Behavioral interview questions are meant to test your...well, behavior, as what the title signifies, and these kind of questions must be answered carefully and if possible with much thought as to what impression your answer would convey.

It is true you need to be totally honest when answering interview questions, especially behavioral ones, yet we sometimes tend to blurt out facts in a different way that we are unable to transmit the information the way we want to.

Here are some standard behavioral interview questions and answers that you can practice on.

Tell me an occasion when you did something that you do not like

"When I was working as a customer service agent, I was selected to pioneer one of the new inbound customer support accounts where we handled after sales queries. The trouble was I did not like phone conversation with customers; I was a chat support agent and have been one for the longest time. Still, since I was offered the task and it is my duty as an employee to help get the job done, I accepted the job and it turned out that speaking with customers just isn't so horrible after all."

Give an example where you worked your way towards achieving your goal

"I started working at a production firm right out of high school. While there, I worked as hard and as good as I could and went up up to the highest attainable rank without having a degree. I then enrolled at a school in order to complete a business degree, then after graduating this company offered me an even greater responsibility. That for me is one of my major triumphs."

Give me an example of a time when you encouraged others

"The recent financial crisis led a lot of companies to downsize; it affected almost every industry including ours. So we stuck with the company and started multi-tasking because lots of jobs were left vacant. The corporation got through the trouble and we all received a reward for carrying out a superior job."

Those are three examples of behavioral interview questions and answers that you can model from. Do not copy those responses most definitely if it does not apply to you. Interviewers are extremely good when it comes to spotting dishonesty.

And if you have been reading closely, you should have seen that the answers start with a situation, followed by an action, then an outcome. Check out the answers once more and check. That is how you answer these form of questions. Situation, action, then outcome. There are plenty of other behavioral interview questions and answers out there but the most crucial thing is that you answer them with honesty and practice delivering them in an effective way.

What Interviewers Ask You During an Interview

Answering interview questions correctly may be the greatest challenge a job hunter has; employers never seem to run out of unexpected questions and they try to make very simple questions hard to answer. You don't really know if it's you or they're just too intimidating that you forget you have a brain.

One of the most effective ways to defeat interview jitters and remain in control during an interview would be to practice interview questions and answers long before your scheduled meeting. This way, typical questions and answers are always fresh in your mind and you can run through how you can say them confidently and in a non-rehearsed fashion.

The following are typical interview questions and answers that you can practice on. These questions never fail to come up in an interview. Note that you cannot copy the sample answers to the letter; you have to come up with your own answers in order to tailor them to your situation.

Tell me something about yourself

This is almost always the first question you'll get asked and most applicants never get this right. Do not take the question literally and start stating anything about yourself, bear in mind that you are selling yourself and your reply to such question should do just that. And keep your answer short and concise. Here's a sample answer for somebody who is trying to find a customer service job.

"My name is Mark Anthony, you can call me Mark. I've been in the industry for 3 years and I'm enjoying every bit of it. I like interacting with people, gaining new friends, and I find it both challenging and exciting whenever I get to interact with difficult persons...etc"

You can add other things like spare-time activities but see how I pointed out attributes that are essential to customer service? It's not easy to find someone who finds dealing with difficult individuals a challenge. That statement alone gives you an advantage over the competition.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

This is a confusing question and very common on interview questions and answers. It's easy to speak about your strengths but why would you want to talk about weaknesses that may cost you the job? It doesn't make sense. Here's a sample response for the weakness part:

"I still find it really hard to delegate simply because I always think that I can carry out things better myself, which is not always the case. Now and then I find myself with too much to deal with. I've been taking care of this weakness though and I discovered that communication is key to attaining great things in a team."

In the example, you'll find that what was stated is both a weakness and a strength. It is a challenge if you simply can't delegate because you think that you can do things better but it also states that you never fail to strive for greatness whenever carrying out a job.

Those are a couple of interview questions and answers that you can start practicing with. Don’t forget, you need to be truthful when answering questions so think of the best answer that presents your real personality.

FAQs about Thank You Letter After Interview

This subject matter is quite timely since the crisis forced a great deal of Americans out of their jobs and towards the unemployment line. A good number of job hunters however, do not recognize the power of sending a thank you letter after interview therefore I decided to make this short article and let everybody understand how saying thank you can raise your chances of obtaining the job.

So why do you need to send a thank you letter after interview?

In order for you to establish a good impression and further validate yourself as a potential candidate for the job. This is also an excellent way for you to start developing connections within the organization.

Whom do you send a thank you letter to?

Everybody you interviewed with. If you were in a panel interview, then make sure that everybody involved receives a thank you letter after interview.

When do you send the thank you letter?

You’d want to distribute them within a day following the interview. In this way, the event is still fresh in the interviewers’ minds and they can quickly remember who you are. And they will definitely remember your name come judgment time. That is the power a simple thank you letter has.

How do you send a thank you letter?

One of my valued clients asked me if delivering it via e-mail is acceptable. It is, but how many e-mails do you think a recruiter gets each day? Most likely well over what they hope to receive so the chances of your thank you letter getting read is a little bit slim. Plus, a physical note has more impact than an electronic note.

Also, do not make the mistake of sending the letter through snail mail because it may not make it on time and it could get lost in transit; taking into consideration the efficiency of our postal system.

The best thing to do is to drop them off personally. If you can hand it to the interviewer in person, better, if not, handing it to the receptionist will do. At least you’re guaranteed that it will reach the intended person.

A thank you letter after interview is a wonderful ally that ought to be added to your arsenal of sales tools. You need to make it a habit to send thank you letters and for sure your call back rate will improve. Chances are you'll even find yourself torn between job offers and that is partly a result of thank you notes you sent.

Quick Tips - Thank You Letter After Interview

Remember how your parents used to HOUND you to get those thank you notes done…or else. “Or else” most of the time meant she was taking the toys away. The Thank You Letter after interview is another event in qualifying for the position.

Who do you have to send one to? A “Thank You Letter after interview” needs to be sent to everyone you interviewed with. If there was a panel of interviewers, make sure you collect a business card of everyone you met with. If you are not sure of the spelling or title of each person, call the company. Introduce yourself to the receptionist and explain that you recently interviewed and would like to confirm the spelling of names and titles of each person you met with.

The receptionist will prove most helpful in sharing this information with you. As a side note, make sure you send some gratitude his/her way as well. You never know how much influence this person has and you want to create as many organizational allies as possible.

How soon do you need to send them out? The “Thank You Letter after interview” needs to be sent within 24 hours. The quick turnaround time exhibits your heightened level of interest in the job and your professionalism.

Although you can send them through regular mail, my suggestion is to drop them off in person. In this way, you wipe out the risk of them not reaching their destination and it gives you an opportunity to properly thank the receptionist for his/her time in furnishing the information to you. You can get a small gift card at the local café, or something small, yet thoughtful, to show your appreciation and to develop that relationship. If you get the job, you have made an immediate friend. If this position happens to go to someone else, you still have a warm contact in the company to follow up with if another job becomes available down the road.

As a job seeker, you can not afford to ignore the “Thank You Letter after interview” step. Correctly written, it is a good opportunity to maintain your “top of mind” position from the view of the employer. It creates a lasting impression of you as a potential candidate and it can tip the scale if the position is highly competitive. You want every advantage you can get and this is one easily missed. Take action and slant the playing field in your favor.

Resume Writing Samples - My Website Reviews

It seems that everyone has an opinion on what resume writing samples should look like. As an employment coach, I am naturally cautious of this rhetoric. So, I decided to find out for myself by researching various online resume writing samples. Turns out, I have good reason to be cautious. There are many reliable sources, and some not so good sources of resume writing samples.

Here are the parameters I based my judgments on:

Available resume writing samples for a wide range of employments and careers;

Offered relevant information on format, style, length, etc.;

Has video tutorials available for those who want more information;

The content is up to date;

The site offered additional support to complement the resume/cover letter, such as interviewing, etc.;

The site was easy to browse through;

Here are a couple of sites that made a good impression on me;

This site by Alison Doyle is one that I pay strong attention to. I enjoy the e-mails I receive from her and the content is important and honest. She updates her information regularly and has credibility in this niche.

I think all Kristi Daeda does is hammer away at her computer all day because she is always coming up with new content. Her information is fresh and she is truly interested in helping others. I love receiving her e-mails as well and being a regular visitor to her site. Her resume writing samples page offers a wealth of information to help you formulate the needed sales tools.

There are other links that should take you to resume writing samples but they direct you to sales pages for professional resume writing services. Just because you are searching for resume writing samples, it does not mean that you need to consider paying for a service to formulate your resume for you. I do recommend that you consider all available resources to help you put your sales tools together. Some are available for free, while others may require compensation.

There are plenty of sites dedicated to resume writing samples, how to formulate a resume, different resume formats, and other topics related to your primary sales tool. You know it is effective if you are getting interest from your intended audience. In order to garner that interest keep the following in mind;

Be strategic in your intended audience.

Choose the appropriate format for your situation.

Have a consistent message so that you are clear in your direction

Demonstrate how you will add value to your next employment opportunity.

Tips and Tricks in Making a Resume

It’s no secret that your resume is an essential sales tool. Every recruiter, hiring manager and decision maker will need a copy of your resume at some point. When making a resume that provides results, there are a few important tips to remember.

Tip #1: Only include relevant content. When making a resume, approach it from the view that each and every word needs to serve a purpose. That purpose is dictated by the post you are aiming for. What education is required? Which of your skills must be emphasized? Are additional certifications or special talents requested?

Your resume needs to highlight your essential skills, education and strengths needed to efficiently perform the duties of THIS position. (Notice specific emphasis on “this”.) Undoubtedly you have additional strengths, yet as much as you want to show off your additional abilities, keep your content relevant.

Tip #2: Every job seeker has three types of skills. These skills include personal, transferable and job related. When making a resume, only transferable and job related skills need to be highlighted. There is no purpose to including your personal skills. These skills are those characteristics innate to you such as being dependable, honest and ethical. Anyone can claim these values and because you have minimal space (1-2 pages) on your CV, you want to highlight skills that are verifiable and proven.

For example, a potential employer can verify your job title, dates of employment, and sales growth or customer service satisfaction ratings. It is much more difficult to check on your reliability. Leave personal traits off of your resume. Instead, have others speak of them through letters of recommendation and testimonials.

Tip #3: When making a resume that earns results, make your content clear and easy to understand. Depending on your experience and employment history, you may find yourself including certifications, training and other information. Be wary not to use abbreviations and industry jargon. Many human resource professionals are not up to speed with industry jargons and you want to reduce the risk of generating questions about your candidacy.

Create your content in a fashion that takes the guesswork out of your certifications, training and skills for maximum effectiveness.

Making a resume needs thought and purpose. After you draft it, have someone else proof it to provide you with their opinion. Identify what needs explaining and what may not read well. Make sure it is properly suited to the functions listed in the job description.

How I Make a Really Good Cover Letter

How many times have you addressed your cover letter “To Whom it May Concern?” A good cover letter has a specific audience. Simply addressing it to a title or a generic phrase is a sure fire way to heighten your risk and reduce your chances of being strongly considered for the post.

In composing a good cover letter, do your due diligence and conduct your research. Enumerated are a couple of tips, just in case you are not sure where to start.

Helpful tip #1 to finding the name and title of your intended audience is to look for an internal ally. Who do you know internally who can help you with your quest? Not only can this ally help uncover the name and title of the important person, they can also find out useful information for you to include when drafting that thoughtfully crafted, good cover letter.

Helpful tip #2 to finding the name and title of your intended audience is to find out on your own. You can do this by engaging the company directly. With one of the jobs I had the success of earning, I was not at all knowledgable of the organization. The job description did not provide a specific name for follow up.

I went to the office and spoke to the attendant. Very pleasantly, I asked a couple of questions about the company and whether she enjoyed working there. I then told her that I was considering applying for the open post, gave her the job title and inquired who the position would report to. She gave me this information and I thanked her for her time and went on my way.

Armed with the name and title of the person the position reported to, I was able to properly address my well constructed good cover letter and increase my chances of earning an interview. My tactic worked as I was called in for an interview the next week.

I found that knowing my audience served another purpose than for just formulating a good cover letter. Knowing the name allowed me to conduct proper research on this person and gave me a leg up when I was called in for the interview.

Formulating a good cover letter is part of your overall technique in earning the job. You have to take this necessary step very seriously in reducing your risk and strengthening your chances to advance to the next step in the employment process.

Thing to do When Preparing for a Job Interview

What exactly does an employer want from you during an interview? Well, they just want to have a talk with you. They just want to check what your credentials are relevant to the job you are vying for.

Before, it was just a one-on-one interview, but now it has been getting more common that one gets to be interviewed by a panel. You have to expend time and effort in preparing for a job interview so that you will be properly armed when you get into the war zone, which is the interview session of course.

You may feel butterflies in your stomach before an interview but that is just natural. To boost your self-esteem and confidence, let me just remind you that the employer chose to have an interview with you because they have already sensed that you might be the appropriate person for the job.

Preparing for the job interview diligently can take you a step further in the employment process. Perhaps you still feel jumpy before your meeting with your employer so here are a few tips in preparing for the job interview.

Now when you get a call from the employer providing you a schedule for the interview, try to ask them some pertinent questions. What is the name of the person who will assess you? When and where is the meeting going to be held? Do you have anything to fill out before the interview begins? What should you wear for the interview? Should you bring any other material that you would need during the interview?

Once the call is done, it is now time to prepare for the job interview proper. If you have seen athletes getting ready for their game, then that is exactly what you must do. Practice with questions you think the interviewer would ask you. Think of a quick response to the questions you think would be asked of you. Think of where the interviewer would lead you to during the conversation. Also think of probable questions you might ask your interviewer.

In preparing for a job interview, make sure that you have answers ready for tough questions like your former job, what you did when you did not have any job and your future plans. It pays well to know the answers to these rather tough questions.

One of the relevant tips for job interviews that are oftentimes overlooked is the questions you want to ask your interviewer. Be straight to the point in asking more information about the company. Give the interviewer a good impression of you with the questions you will be throwing. To do this, make sure that you have thoroughly read the job description for the position you are applying for.

It is also important that you visit the website of the employer. HR Personnel do not expect you to be so confident during the interview. But if you have been preparing for a job interview, then you will be confident which will give you an advantage over other applicants.

Benefits of Job Hunting Websites

Job hunting websites have attained much popularity nowadays. With a simple search using the keywords "job hunting websites", you will get over a couple of million hits. If you think that's not popular enough, then I no longer know what that is. With that number of results that you can get online, I am sure that you would easily get articles to study on that can focus on the specific job title you are vying for.

A lot of job searchers are just using computers and getting into job hunting websites and e-mailing applications blindly without realizing that they are not well suited for the jobs. Applying through job hunting websites could be a wrong move for you that can get you nowhere.

Did you know that only about 3% of people applying online get hired by employers? This actually means that job hunting websites offer tiny hope in getting you a job plus the fact that getting abundant positions is a very tough competition. It is better to find some other ways to get a job because you might just be spending your valuable time into something worthless.

There are methods that you can use which have more potential of offering benefits to you. Online job ads may still have some uses that can somehow get you prepared for job hunting. Here are some of them:

There are tools on job hunting websites that will provide you tips on your job search. Most often, these articles are meant to inform you on how to construct a good resume, how to behave correctly in an interview, what to write on your thank you letter and many more.

Most of the job hunting websites will let you access these articles without any charge so it is very advisable to take advantage of them. Take a particular attention to the kinds of job market available.

Take note of the trend where most employers hire professionals. There may be home-based jobs available that you might want to take a closer look at. Some of them may just be scams but at least you have an idea of what industries seriously need new hires.

Job hunting websites may not give direct assistance at all but there are other aspects of it that can still give you a guide to better understand how to get yourself employed. The internet is an awesome tool anyway that can give you more information on the business or industry you prefer to tread on.

3 Job Hunting Myths that Hinder Your Success

There may be some intriguing ideas in your mind that you want to use in your job search. You might probably have a mistaken notion that these would work even though they are just job hunting myths. Listed below are three of the job hunting myths that I have compiled and which you can avoid for you to have a higher chance of getting employed.

1.One of the most common of the job hunting myths and first in our list is the job hunt using internet job ads. You might have another opinion regarding this. However, you need to keep in mind that these online job ads are only able to help just about 3 percent of job seekers.

Most people looking for jobs who fall into the trap of searching for jobs using online employment ads and even applying to them. There are also other job hunters you have to compete with in getting the position which diminishes your chance of getting employed and heightens your feeling of failure.

2.The second in our job hunting myths list is trusting on recruitment agencies to get employed. Yes, they can offer help but you have to think that employers hire them to hire people like you. It is also true that agencies are deeply connected to companies who would hire.

The downside, however, is that you may be able to maximize the payment that is meant for you. This is because what the employer will pay you already includes the payment they will give to the manpower agency. That means that the salary offered to you by the potential employer will still be deducted. I am sure that you would agree that you do not want to spend on something that you know you can live without.

3.The third part in our job hunting myths is the thinking that only people who are younger can take advantage of social networking sites to boost their chance of getting employed.

This is obviously a myth because as what you would be able to observe right now, there are more people who are middle-aged and on their prime years that are taking advantage of Facebook, MySpace, and other sites to search for jobs.

If you are one of these middle-aged people, do not worry because companies also use these social networking sites to search for new employees to train and they often look at the experience and background of the applicants, not the age.

Social networking is basically for everybody, most especially because they are free. Your personal qualifications are already prepared in just one setting so you do not have to modify your CV and credentials time and time again.

Now that you are informed of the job hunting myths that would victimize you into unemployment and frustration, you have to arm yourself with the right processes that work. Keep in mind that job hunting is not a light task but you have to put your mind and body into it for you to get the desired results.

What an Informational Interview is and How it Works

An informational interview is another important aspect in your job search experience. You might want to know what the right definition of informational interview, right? It is actually a casual one on one conversation with a potential employer in the industry where you have expressed a desire to follow a specific job title.

One good example is when you have an expertise in sales and you are inclined to know if there are available positions in the marketing industry. Below are some of the tips on how to effectively conduct a good informational interview.

Research on informational interview on your own. You can browse through websites that are linked to companies looking to employ new set of people. If you have already chosen the company that you would like to be involved in, study resources about that company including their products, company profile and the kind of people interested in their products and services.

Make use of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc or local organizations and clubs like your sports club to get in first hand information from someone who knows the business and whom you will be having an informational interview with.

Once you already have identified the person to connect with, send him a short letter indicating that you want to take a few minutes of his time. Do not forget to put your name and your motive why you are asking him to speak with you. Tell that person honestly that you just want to communicate to someone who knows about the business because you are thinking of a career move.

Remember to talk about the organization you have in common with such as you may have been schoolmates once or you are both members of a club in your community. Impart to that person what you have learned about the business by posing relevant questions during the few minutes of your informational interview.

If you think that your conversation is going the right way, tell the person that you had a good time talking to him and that you are very much interested in submitting a job application for their available vacancies. That person may be able to express the same desire in hiring you.

Never forget to get the person's calling card and send him a thank you letter appreciating his time talking to you.

Informational interviews can really be of great assistance for you in collecting important information and knowing the right people in the industry of your interest. If you engage yourself in employment opportunities like this, you are surely going to have more chances in getting hired.

How to Answer the Question "What Job is Right For Me?"

One of the common mistakes that job seekers make is adapting their skills to any job opportunity they come across with. They think that if they get hired, they’ll eventually develop the necessary skills and become effective in the job. Some people do get hired by employing this method but most of them become ineffective and unhappy on the job that they either quit or get fired after some time.

If you want to be truly successful in job hunting and get yourself out of the unemployment line for good, you have to answer the question “what job is right for me?” first. This is for you to identify your skills, knowledge, and expertise so you can identify the right jobs for you. Below I included an exercise and a tip that will help you answer the question “what job is right for me?”

Exercise: This is very important and the first thing that you should do even before drafting your resume. Sit back and list down things that you want to do with your career, identify the tasks that you enjoy doing, think of the work environment that you want to work under, think of the kind people that you want to work with, and think of the job that you want to be doing. List all your answers so you can see them on paper. Once you have the list, you can now clearly identify the things that you need to do in order to make what you envisioned a reality.

If you are not good in assessing yourself, a good alternative that will help you answer the question “what job is right for me?” is a personal assessment test. These are good resources that are head on in identifying skills and expertise. You have to be really honest though when answering the questions; otherwise, the results will be incorrect.

Tip: After identifying your skills and expertise, you can now scan newspapers and visit job boards for potential employers. List down job opportunities that fit your criteria then narrow them down by eliminating companies that don’t fit your values and interests. Once you have the final list you can now start drafting your resume and cover letters.

Job hunting can be very frustrating especially to those who do not know what they’re looking for. Some people think that answering the question “what job is right for me?” is a waste of time but it’s not. It’s actually a shortcut because you will be able to avoid opportunities that will only waste your time. So clear your mind, follow the tips above and you’ll be on your way to finding a lasting job.
